Backdating council tax benefit

26 Mar

If your savings and investments are more than £16,000, you will not be entitled to Council Tax Reduction unless you are in receipt of Guarantee Credit.

Changes may mean you are entitled to a higher or lower reduction.

You can find out if you qualify by using our Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction calculator (opens in new window) If you qualify and want to claim housing benefit and/or council tax reduction you can claim online right now using the button below.

If you have said you do the DWP may pass this information to us but you still need to apply directly to us.

Your entitlement will usually start on the Monday after the date we receive your application.

If you want to claim from an earlier date see our Backdating page.

When you submit your claim, you will be told what evidence you need to supply.

You can check if you are entitled to Council Tax Reduction by using our calculator, it’s easy to use and should only take 10-15 minutes to complete.

If you have recently applied for benefit with the Department for Works and Pensions (DWP) they will ask if you want to apply for Council Tax Reduction.

However, if you are able to provide all of the information with your claim then we will be able to sort out your claim much more quickly and we will not have to contact you for more information. If you require any further information on how to claim please contact us.

Council Tax Reduction can reduce your Council Tax bill if you are on a low income.
